Experience Design Lead

When I joined Redbubble, the design team had just welcomed their new General Manager of Design, and were experiencing their first stages of maturation as the business had just listed on the ASX. Previously the teams were organized in a flat structure, that was not set up to scale. As a result of the evolution to add structure, senior designers had been promoted early, to help manage the growing team and I was brought in to support these new leads. This role worked on 3 levels;- to support the GM in his activities to evolve the Design practice in the business and manage the team; at lead level, to drive two streams of work, and manage design output and designers in these streams; and third, doing overflow design work within these streams.

  • Role & Responsibilities:
  • Set up design-team-wide frameworks and practices to bring rigour and support to the design team
  • Supoort the hire and establishemnt of the UX research team at Redbubble
  • Support the GM of Design to lead the overall design team, manage designers and mentor lead level designer
  • Lead two streams of work on ground level, each requiring partnership with leading Product Manager and Lead Engineer or roadmap development, product strategy
  • Manage designers and design work in these two streams of design roadmaps
  • Take on design work where required or appropriate
  • Outcomes & Achievements:
  • Contributed to, and delivered the first and largest field research on our fulfiller partners all over North America, collated data into journey maps and presented insights in partnership with our new UX researcher
  • Utilised these Fulfiller research insights to then design our first Fulfiller portal, enabling better management of our fulfiller relationships and transparency between software systems
  • Developed Redbubble's first Design Internship program providing our junior and mid-level designers an opportunity to mentor and develop leadership skills, as well as support the next generation of designers in the industry
  • Successfully managed two streams of work that delivered on our Global Acquisition and Scalability activities
  • Defined and introduced the new role of UX Developer as a technical growth path for UX designers who code
  • Worked in partnership with our new leads to devlop our design role architectures, design-pairing, and the introduction of Abstract for remote collaboration

Product Manager, Global Acquisition, Redbubble

Haifa is one of those rare designers that can be deep in the details while keeping perspective on the bigger picture and long-range goals. The work we did together in Global Acquisition spanned a range from design exercises to develop strategy and roadmaps, right down to the weeds, figuring out solutions with engineers and delivering immediate and tactical value. Hard to find great designers that understand how to do lean UX and experimentation well, while still ensuring we research, explore and ship a product that customers will love.
